Historic high surf around California this few days

Because of strong surging storm way out around Hawaii, the California coast has seen historic high surf wave, rogue wave up to 7 - 10 feet this pass week ago. Wave this high can only see this somewhere else, not around Southern California. So I send myself to the Coast to see this afternoon. I understand the highest wave occur around 4AM...hm, maybe I should...never mind.

While taking photo at the beach, I found out how unpredictable the wave can be. I stood on the sand berm (built to block the wave) and observed wave did go pass near it. So I jump down to get a better angle. Then suddently a big wave come crashing. I only had a chance to get up and not get the camera wet. Since I was kneeling down, my whole body up to my chest was soak up with sea water. All my pocket was filled with sand.

Here is what I saw:

Dogoneit! forgot the big flash light.

Sony F828: what an exceptional digit cam

The Sony F828 is a rarity in this age of rapid change in digital camera. Instant depreciation in value is the norm. But the F828 has perform rather nicely 2 years later and still pretty competive with the current crop 8 mp cameras. The new replacement from sony is not better. Its lense has smaller maximum aperture. The F828 is good becuase it has many advanced features:

- Its CMOS chip has an extra green photosensor, a Sony only. Since human eye can see green better than any color, this make sensor.
- Its lense is a Carl Zeiss T* 2-2.8 28-200
- Good sturdy magnesium body. Mine got bang up pretty when I fell of my motorcycle. Lense hood and the rim was completely gone. $150 repair and it's as good as new.

Digital cameras generally are not good at flash photography. It's always too hot. The F828 with its built-in flash is pretty dismal like all them. So I was presently suprise at the result I got with using the HVL-F32X flash light.

It's only $120.00 and fully compatible with the F828.

The following two pictures are taken with the flash. It's especially good at bouce flash. All automatic. But the flash has only huge problem: flash charge cycle is very long :(. Can't do fast pace shoot.

This is taken with the built=in flash:

The only thing keeping this great camera from being a professional camera is it's just too daun slow and the mode dial interface is clumsy.

My Midrodriver went kaput loaded with good pics

My Microdrive, loaded with some very nice pictues I took in the S.F. Bay Area over the Thanksgiving holiday, is dead. I tried every recovery program I can find and none can do anything. What the drive does now is it powers up when plug-in to the USB port; it then sings high pitch noise (not constant tone but up and down in frequency a little, staying in the high freqency) for several minutes and then the sound changes into ticking like a clock. No cameras or computers can format it. So it just junk now.

I have a few questions:

1. Does it have a lifetime warranty?

Answer: From Hitachi Microdrive Products – 1 year ( 2 years for Europe)

But mind was a IBM product. Long before Hitachi bought the businese from IBM. What's the warranty back then?

Answer: 1 yr.

So my Microdrive is definitely junk now.
