New Ubuntu Linux 6.10 Install

I installed Ubuntu Linux 6.10 on my very old Fujitsu Lifebook today. The installation was very easy except one minor problem: when following the install wizard from step 1 to step 2 and so on, if mouse cursor rest on the 'Forward' button, it does not respond to click. I had to move the mouse pointer out and back into the button for the click to work.

Unlike Fedora 5 (my previous Linux), the sound works, the screen resolution was detected and set properly: 1280x768. The GUI menus are concise. There is not a ton of items. Inserting CD, USB drive would auto mount and file browser comes up automatically. Soon Ubuntu will make Mac OSX look like Windows...ha ha. Joking aside, Ubuntu is very polish and friendly.

What's my root password?

The very first thing I scratch my head about was how to be 'root'. It turns out 'root' is not needed in the usual fashion as in other Unix type system. As was clearly pointed out on the very first opening of terminal, man sudo explains everything: 'sudo' wantsthe initial user's password. The initial user was created during install.

How to install Sun Java5 JDK?

After much search and found no real answer, I went to ubuntuforums.org to ask the question and got the answer:

sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk

To install java plugin for Firefox, use the Add/Remove Application, search for 'Sun Java' and install it.

How to install Rails?

This is a hard one. I google 'ubuntu rails' and got quite a few web pages explaining how to do. Many of them tell you to do 'sudo apt-get install ruby rails'. This sort of work, Ruby, Gem and Rails gets install. But things don't work completely.

rails test-rails
cd test-rails
script/server

Then browse http://localhost:3000/ would show the static rails welcome page alright. But clicking the 'About you application's environment' would result in:

Routing Error, Recognition failed for "/rails/info/properties".
Something is a missed, but it's not obvious. It's way over my skill level to debug this. So I went to ask.com to search 'ubuntu rails' for answer and get the 'right' solution on the very first entry: http://paulgoscicki.com/archives/2005/09/ruby-on-rails-on-ubuntu/
Following his instructions, I got Rails up and running.

There is one last problem: Ruby 1.8.4 was installed instead of 1.8.5, which is the latest version.
