I Hate Windows Vista
We got a couple of new PCs and they come with Vista pre-installed. So far it has been full of hassles and very little joys. Sure, Vista look pretty but it's not easy to move from XP to Vista. As an end user, we just want the new PCs to work like to good old one. This mean able to connect to existing hardware, connect to network drives, etc. Thus far, it's been pretty problematic.
First all, when we turn on the PC, it couldn't talk to the PS2 mouse and keyboard that comes with the machines. So we couldn't get pass Vista first time initialization. We have to go find some USB mouse to click through and get it started. Then there is no sound. The confusing thing is clicking the sound hardware button produce sound. But Windows itself makes no sound. After some clicking around, we finally found the problem to be the sound environment setting. It's set to "None". Setting it to "Generic" fixed the problem. Why Vista's default not set to "Just Work"? User shouldn't have to go through trial and error to get to up and working.
We have a Panasonic KX-MB781 multifunction fax printer. So far, we couldn't find the Vista Driver for it. The lesson here is don't buy Panasonic printer because their support is terrible. There is no driver download on their web site. I guess one way to fix this problem is to go buy a new one, open it and copy the driver CD and return it.
Another problem is we cannot log into network drive. You enter the 'user-name', 'password', press Ok, then Vista automatically change the user name to 'machine-name\user-name' and login just fail :(. Why can't Vista let me just enter the simple 'user-name'? I'm sure there is real good reason for this but Vista is not telling.
